What size coffee table should you choose for your sofa?

By , publisher of DecoScale · published

Place the coffee table 40 to 60 cm from the sofa, centred on it and entirely on the rug. Its length is about two-thirds of the sofa's: 140 cm for a 210 cm sofa. Here is what that gives sofa by sofa, the space to allow in front of it, and the rug you need underneath.

How far should a coffee table be from the sofa?

Between 40 and 60 cm, measured from the front of the sofa to the edge of the table facing it: enough to pass your legs, close enough to set down a cup without getting up. That is the range DecoScale checks on the plan of your room. The retailer NV Gallery recommends 40 to 50 cm, inside ours.

The same source asks for at least 70 cm between the coffee table and other furniture, such as a TV unit or armchairs, so you can move around without squeezing past.

What length of coffee table for my sofa?

The usual rule: about two-thirds of the sofa's length. NV Gallery gives it that way, with two examples: 140 cm for a 210 cm sofa and 120 cm for a 180 cm sofa. The chart applies that ratio to common sofa lengths, arms included.

Two-thirds: NV Gallery's benchmark, not checked by DecoScale. The tolerated offset, a quarter of the sofa's length: a DecoScale rule.

DecoScale does not judge the length of the table: its rule is about position and distance, not about the size ratio with the sofa. Two-thirds is a benchmark to take as it is, not something the engine measures.

Should the coffee table be centred on the sofa?

Yes, to within a quarter of the sofa's length. DecoScale flags a table whose middle is off by more than a quarter of the sofa's length from the sofa's middle: the last column of the chart gives that tolerance, sofa by sofa. The longer the sofa, the wider that tolerance.

The table must also be in front of the sofa, on the side you face. A table behind the sofa, at the right distance, is still a fault.

How much space in front of the sofa for a coffee table?

The distance to the sofa, plus the depth of the table. For a round or square table, the depth is the diameter or the side. DecoScale counts a round table as a square of its diameter: an 80 cm round table takes up 80 × 80 cm of floor.

60100120
70110130
80120140
90130150
100140160

That is the space between the front of the sofa and the far edge of the table, not what is left afterwards for moving about: add the walkway you want behind the table, up to the furniture opposite. In a narrow living room, it is this depth that counts first, before the length: see small living room layout.

Round or rectangular coffee table?

On the floor, the difference is the shape of the footprint. An 80 cm round table takes 80 cm of width and 80 cm of depth; a 120 × 60 cm rectangle takes 120 cm of width and only 60 of depth. At the same depth, a longer table does not need more space in front of the sofa: it needs it along the wall. NV Gallery notes that a round table, having no corners, is easier to move around; that is a comfort argument, which DecoScale does not measure.

How high should a coffee table be?

About the height of the sofa seat, generally 40 to 45 cm according to NV Gallery. A low sofa calls for a lower table. DecoScale does not judge height: a catalogue table is drawn at the height the merchant publishes, and the engine checks its position, not its relation to the seat.

What rug under a coffee table?

A rug that carries the whole table. In a living room, DecoScale asks for the coffee table to sit at least 98% on the rug, and for the sofa's front legs to stand on it by at least 15 cm. The rug therefore has to be deep enough to run from under the sofa's front legs to the far edge of the table, at the minimum gap from the sofa:

4095
50105
60115
70125
80135
90145
100155

Sofa's front legs on the rug (15 cm) + minimum gap to the sofa (40 cm) + table depth.

At the sides, NV Gallery has the rug extend at least 20 to 30 cm beyond the table on each side: for a 120 × 60 cm table, a rug of at least 160 × 100 cm. Common sizes, sofa by sofa, are on the rug size guide.

How does DecoScale place the coffee table?

It places the sofa first, then the table in front of it, centred, at the right distance, on the rug. These rules are penalties, not bans: in a small room, the engine looks for the layout that breaks the fewest. The table is chosen from the catalogue, at its real dimensions, and placed according to those dimensions. The plan of the room comes from your photos, and from two tape-measure dimensions DecoScale asks you for before drawing: the details are on the Method page.

The other living room distances are on the room layout dimensions page. For TV stand height and screen distance, see TV viewing distance.

Frequently asked questions

How far should a coffee table be from the sofa?

Between 40 and 60 cm, from the front of the sofa to the edge of the table. NV Gallery recommends 40 to 50 cm, inside that range.

What size coffee table for a 210 cm sofa?

About 140 cm, two-thirds of the sofa's length. For a 180 cm sofa, about 120 cm. That is a common benchmark, not a rule DecoScale checks.

How much space in front of the sofa for a 60 cm deep coffee table?

100 to 120 cm between the front of the sofa and the far edge of the table: the gap to the sofa, 40 to 60 cm, plus the table's 60 cm. A round table 60 cm across takes the same space.

Should the coffee table be centred on the sofa?

Yes. DecoScale tolerates an offset of at most a quarter of the sofa's length between the middle of the table and the middle of the sofa: 52.5 cm for a 210 cm sofa.

What rug do you need under a coffee table?

A rug that carries the whole table, with the sofa's front legs standing on it by at least 15 cm. For a 60 cm deep table, that takes a rug at least 115 cm deep.

How high should a coffee table be?

About the height of the sofa seat, generally 40 to 45 cm according to NV Gallery. DecoScale does not check that height.
