What size duvet, duvet cover and pillowcase should you choose for a bed?

By , publisher of DecoScale · published

A duvet overhangs the mattress by 60 to 100 cm in width and is at least as long: for a 160 cm mattress, 220 to 260 cm across. Its cover is the same size, within 2 cm under and 5 cm over. Those are DecoScale's rules so that the bedding you buy fits the bed it draws.

What size duvet for a bed?

DecoScale judges that a duvet covers the mattress when, one way or the other, the side laid across overhangs the mattress width by 60 to 100 cm, and the other side is at least as long as the mattress. Those limits are DecoScale's choice, drawn from the sizes retailers pair with each bed, not a standard. The chart gives, for common mattresses, the duvet width across and the minimum length, then what the catalogue offers at those sizes.

Mattress + 60 to + 100 cm across, length at least the mattress's, the duvet laid either way. Survey of 6 October 2026.

Dated survey of 6 October 2026 over DecoScale's catalogue: 29 duvets, 349 fitted sheets. The numbers of listings are those DecoScale's rule accepts for each mattress; they describe what these retailers sell, not a standard.

What size duvet cover?

The same as the duvet, side by side: DecoScale accepts a cover that falls short by at most 2 cm and overshoots by at most 5 cm. A narrower cover does not hold its duvet; a cover twenty centimetres longer lets it float. The chart gives the accepted range for each duvet size in the catalogue.

When the catalogue has no cover at a duvet's size, DecoScale does not suggest a cover with it: on 6 October 2026, that is the case for duvets of 150 × 200, 180 × 250 and 230 × 250 cm.

What size pillowcase?

The same rule: the size of the pillow, within 2 cm under and 5 cm over, which accepts a 50 by 75 cm envelope-flap case for a 50 by 70 cm pillow.

Pillow (cm)Pillowcase accepted, width × length (cm)Catalogue pillowcases accepted (listings)

What size fitted sheet?

The same as the mattress, with the same tolerance. DecoScale rejects a flat sheet: the render stretches a fitted sheet over the mattress, and a flat sheet's size cannot be compared with a mattress's. It does not compare the pocket depth of the fitted sheet with the thickness of the mattress: check it on the retailer's page.

And the mattress, against the bed?

DecoScale rules out a mattress that does not fit in the footprint of the bed frame, or that is not the sleeping size the retailer declares for that bed. Bed sizes are on the bed size guide.

What DecoScale checks, and what it does not

DecoScale checks that the mattress fits the bed, that the duvet covers the mattress, and that cover, pillowcase and fitted sheet are the size of what they dress. It checks neither the weight of the duvet, nor the fabric, nor the thickness of the mattress. A size the retailer does not publish is not asserted: the product is not paired. The plan of the room comes from your photos and two tape-measure dimensions: see the Method page. For the other measurements of a bedroom: small bedroom layout.
