How high should a wall shelf be hung?
For what you use every day, 90 to 160 cm from the floor: the zone you reach without effort. The retailer Chill House gives eye level, 140 to 150 cm for most adults, as a benchmark for a focal point, and 100 to 120 cm for an entryway shelf.
DecoScale hangs the bottom of a wall object, shelf, frame or mirror, at 100 cm from the floor by default: above a low unit no taller than 90 cm. That is a declared convention, not a measurement. In the cases below, the height depends on what is underneath.

How high above a sofa?
At least 25 to 30 cm above the backrest, according to Chill House: high enough not to feel cramped, low enough for the shelf to stay tied to the furniture. The chart gives the bottom of the shelf for each backrest height, which you measure at home.
| Height of the sofa's backrest (cm) | Bottom of the shelf, from the floor (cm) |
|---|---|
| 80 | 105 to 110 |
| 85 | 110 to 115 |
| 90 | 115 to 120 |
| 95 | 120 to 125 |
| 100 | 125 to 130 |
Chill House: at least 25 to 30 cm above the backrest. Not checked by DecoScale.
DecoScale does not hang shelves above the sofa by a rule: only the artwork, the picture, is. The height above is a retailer's benchmark.
How high above a desk?
For files and books you pick up without standing, 20 to 30 cm above the desk, again according to Chill House. Higher up, the shelf is for storing, not working.
How high above a radiator?
At least 30 cm above its top. A shelf too close sends the heat back against the wall: DecoScale flags a shelf that covers a radiator by less than that, the heat stays trapped.
| Height of the radiator (cm) | Bottom of the shelf at least, from the floor (cm) |
|---|---|
| 40 | 70 |
| 60 | 90 |
| 80 | 110 |
| 100 | 130 |
Top of the radiator + 30 cm: DecoScale's rule.
What is the maximum height below a ceiling?
The top of the shelf stays at least 20 cm below the ceiling for DecoScale: something hung does not touch the ceiling.
| Ceiling height (cm) | Top of the shelf at most, from the floor (cm) |
|---|---|
| 240 | 220 |
| 250 | 230 |
| 260 | 240 |
| 270 | 250 |
Ceiling − 20 cm: DecoScale's rule.
How does DecoScale place a wall shelf?
As a wall object: a thin box, hung at its hanging height, which the engine moves along the walls. It judges its position against doors, windows, the television or the fireplace, and against what stands in front. The shelf chosen comes from the catalogue, at its real dimensions. These rules are penalties, not bans: in a small room, it looks for the layout that breaks the fewest. The plan of the room comes from your photos and two tape-measure dimensions: see the Method page. The other distances in a room are on the room layout dimensions page.
