The real dimensions of furniture in 2026

By , publisher of DecoScale · published

A “3-seater” sofa measures a median 187 cm at IKEA and 256 cm at Bobochic. A 160 × 200 bed takes up to 228 cm of width. A desk, though, stands 75 to under 80 cm high three times out of four. Eight findings from 5668 product listings, surveyed on 20 October 2026, retailer by retailer.

What this study measures

The dimensions retailers publish for their furniture, as DecoScale reads them to place a piece in a room. The survey of 20 October 2026 covers 5668 listings from 18 retailers in eleven functions (sofa, armchair, coffee table, low cabinet, rug, bed, mattress, bedside table, chest of drawers, wardrobe, desk), drawn from the 8847 listings in DecoScale's catalogue. Figures are given per retailer: one retailer sometimes accounts for three quarters of a function, and a median across all retailers would only describe that one. The method and its limits are set out at the end of the page.

1. The number of seats does not give a sofa's width

The median width of a straight “3-seater” sofa runs from 187 cm at IKEA to 256 cm at Bobochic: 69 cm apart for the same label. More striking still: Bobochic's median “2-seater” (210 cm) is wider than the median “3-seater” at IKEA, Miliboo and Drawer.

2. Sofa depth varies by 26 cm

The same holds for depth: from a median 83 cm at IKEA to 109 cm at Bobochic for a “3-seater” (last column of the first chart). In a narrow living room, those centimetres come out of the walkway in front of the sofa.

3. A 160 × 200 bed does not measure 160 × 200

160 × 200 is the size of the mattress, not of the bed. The frame adds a median 6 cm (at IKEA) to 20 cm of width depending on the retailer, and up to 228 cm for an upholstered storage bed. It is the frame that has to fit between the walls, with room for the bedside tables.

4. Leaving Casanova aside, 160 × 200 is the most offered bed size

Counted in models (a model offered in four sizes counts once per size), and leaving out Casanova, which offers nearly each of its 85 models in 140, 160 and 180 cm widths: of 134 bed models, 72 come in 160 × 200, against 29 in 140 × 200 and 32 in 140 × 190.

5. Going from 140 to 160 costs 6 to 20% more, by retailer

For the same model offered in both sizes, the 160 × 200 costs a median €50 (+6.3%) at Casanova and €30 (+20.1%) at IKEA.

6. One chest of drawers in five reaches windowsill height

24 chests of drawers out of 110 stand at least 90 cm high. DecoScale does not place a piece of that height in front of a window: it would get in the way of opening it. The share depends mostly on the retailer: 7 out of 10 at Massivmoebel24, none at Casanova or Miliboo.

7. Desk height is agreed on, desk width is not

100 desks out of 136 stand 75 to under 80 cm high, and each retailer's median height lies between 75 and 78 cm. Their median width, on the other hand, runs from 105 to 152 cm.

8. The other heights retailers agree on

Two other dimensions cluster from one retailer to the next: the height of the coffee table and that of the bedside table.

Method

DecoScale's catalogue gathers retailer listings collected between 24 August 2026 and 16 October 2026, from their affiliate feeds or product pages. Each listing is sorted by DecoScale's own sort, the one that chooses the furniture of a layout: a storage unit over 140 cm high is a wardrobe, a table under 60 cm wide is not a coffee table, a dressing island is not a wardrobe. Dimensions are those the retailer publishes; DecoScale leaves out those read with doubt (confidence under 0.7) and those outside the plausible range of the function. Of 5744 listings in these functions, 76 are left out this way. A retailer appears in a chart only from 5 listings. Prices are those of the collection date. Sofas are sorted by the number of seats written in their title; the 1653 corner, sofa-bed, modular or chaise sofas are set apart.

Limits

This survey describes what the retailers in DecoScale's catalogue sell, not the whole market: a retailer missing from the catalogue is missing here. Dimensions are not checked by the retailers nor measured by DecoScale. Counts are uneven: 316 “3-seater” sofas at Bobochic, 5 at IKEA. Colour variants of one model each count as a listing, except for beds, counted in models in finding 4.

Frequently asked questions

How wide is a 3-seater sofa?

It depends on the retailer: a median 187 to 256 cm across the retailers surveyed on 20 October 2026. Only the width published on the listing, arms included, tells you if the sofa fits.

How much space does a 160 × 200 bed take?

More than 160 × 200: the frame adds a median 6 to 20 cm of width depending on the retailer, up to 228 cm for a storage bed.

What is the standard height of a desk?

Of 136 desks surveyed, 100 stand 75 to under 80 cm high.

Where do these figures come from?

From the product listings of 18 retailers, surveyed on 20 October 2026 in DecoScale's catalogue, retailer by retailer. The method and limits are described on this page.
